Service to the Armed Forces (SAF) Caseworker

Department: Emergency Services

Purpose: Service to the Armed Forces (SAF) Caseworkers provides emergency communications between military personnel and their families in time of crisis when the Red Cross office is closed. Volunteers will schedule shifts during the day to take calls from military families, complete the appropriate paperwork, and verify the information for the military.

Responsibilities:

  • Take calls referred during a specified shift.
  • Maintain confidentiality of caller and service member.
  • Conduct an interview to obtain relevant information needed to process the request.
  • Verify information received from the families.
  • Complete necessary documentation.
  • Route the message to the appropriate Red Cross authorities.
  • Ensure staff has the complete documentation for the case.

Qualifications:

  • Compassionate and willingness to support the American Red Cross Mission.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in emergency situations and in situations not covered in training.
  • Ability to work with diverse personalities and situations.
  • Reliable
  • Access to a telephone and/or computer with internet access.

Training:

  • Volunteer Orientation (video or online modules)
  • Introduction to Case Management, a Network of Service.
  • Chapter Specific Training, if needed.

Commitment:

  • Volunteers take one week of duty at a time, covering calls between the hours of 5pm and 9am Monday through Friday and 24 hours a day on the weekends. Taking a duty a minimum of once every two-three months.
